Does Your Daughter Have Compulsive Personality Disorder? Clearview Can Help
Compulsive Personality Disorder, sometimes called Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder or OCPD. This is characterized by a fixation with perfectionism and control, showing itself in highly motivated (often firstborn) children. Your girl may find it very difficult to be decisive, and be oversensitive to critique, resist being flexible or open to new situations, as she is compulsively reaching for perfection in virtually everything she does. She may show repetitive behaviors (as in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder*) beyond her control to stop, be preoccupied with minutiae, her own rules, and lists, and even be somewhat of a workaholic.
She will likely struggle with her own and perceived expectations of those around her. Causes are believed to be an interlinking of environmental, genetic, and unbalanced brain chemistry.
*Note: while sometimes used interchangeably, OCPD is not to be confused with OCD. An OCD sufferer has unwanted thoughts, but an OCPD sufferer believes her thinking to be correct and natural.
Clearview Girls Academy is an Ideal Setting to Help Your Daughter with Compulsive Personality Disorder
No blood tests can prove your daughter’s diagnosis; a physician must determine whether her symptoms and life history meet the criteria. Her thinking may be so intuitive that she does not recognize that she has this problem, possibly not even realizing it until her world collapses around her.
Continual group, individual and long-term psychotherapy can improve your daughter’s situation, as she will likely be unwilling to seek these changes. It is important to remember that she has not chosen to have these compulsive thoughts, so any judgment, real or perceived, only increases the stress she already deals with. It is important to encourage her, to help her be comfortable with new ways of thinking, and accept her rather than judge her for unacceptable behaviors.
Support groups are an excellent adjunct to gaining emotional and social support from the community, assuring your daughter’s independence and stability.
