Stress is a common issue that affects many people. The demands of coursework, interpersonal relationships, co-curricular activities, and technology are some of the factors that create stress for teens. Along with these factors, various pressures and stressors are felt by the students who come to Clearview Horizon Girls Academy. For these teens, mindfulness practices can be effective tools for coping with stress, strengthening resilience, and improving quality of life.

Understanding Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a self-help method that helps people increase their focus on the present time. Techniques of this kind lead to positive thinking and greater acceptance of situations. Mindfulness is an active state of being aware of the current moment and the surroundings without passing any judgments. It includes knowing the thoughts one is having, the feelings one is experiencing, and the sensations one’s body is having in correlation with the environment. The goal is to learn to accept and not become too involved in feelings and events that are occurring. This way, a teen’s emotions don’t take over.

The Advantages of Mindfulness

Engaging in mindfulness practices can have a wide range of benefits for our students at Clearview Horizon Girls Academy. Mindfulness practices are also a great way to practice spiritual self-care. Mindfulness not only will help with your daughter’s time here as a student but will help her in adulthood as well. The following are some of the benefits of mindfulness.

Mindfulness Reduces Stress and Anxiety

Mindfulness practices such as meditation and deep breathing have been found to reduce stress and anxiety. Teens, who are under a lot of stress at school and in social spheres, can find solace in these practices. Mindfulness helps to lower cortisol levels, which is the primary stress hormone. The practice also helps to enhance relaxation and improve emotional regulation.

Mindfulness Improves Attention and Focus

During the period of adolescence, many distractions are present. It is important for teenagers to enhance concentration to help get them over some of the obstacles that may come their way. Mindfulness can strengthen concentration as teens focus on one specific thing such as the breath. It can reduce cognitive overload or overthinking and enhance executive functioning.

Mindfulness Enhances Emotional Regulation

Emotional regulation involves controlling how one reacts emotionally and having a productive way to express those feelings. Mindfulness can be very useful for teenagers as they are quite often faced with complex emotional environments. Practicing mindfulness can help your daughter improve her self-awareness about her current emotional state, encourage acceptance of the emotions she is experiencing, and build resilience in managing these feelings.

Mindfulness Builds Resilience

The concept of resilience is defined as the ability to recover from or be unharmed by adverse conditions or emotional states. Mindfulness contributes to resilience by helping your daughter to develop appropriate coping skills to deal with everyday stressors. It can also help to alter her perspective on her current situation and strengthen her inner resources, setting her up for success in her recovery journey at Clearview Horizon Girls Academy.

Mindfulness Improves Overall Well-Being

Stress control, enhanced brain and mental performance, and mental health are some of the advantages of mindfulness. Practicing mindfulness helps our students to establish a better sleep schedule and improve sleep quality, increase self-compassion, and improve their relationships with others. The benefits of mindfulness can spread across many areas of life and truly make a difference in your daughter’s well-being.

Mindfulness Practices for Teenagers

Meditation, deep breathing, and body scanning practices can increase your daughter’s capacity for being mindful during her treatment journey.

Meditation Techniques

The practice of meditation involves sitting down and directing one’s mind to a certain object or experience. Types of meditation that may benefit your daughter may include following a recorded guide, mindfulness meditations, or loving-kindness meditation.

Deep Breathing

Breathing is a great way to ease stress and encourage the body to relax. This type of mindfulness may include the following breathing techniques:

  • Diaphragmatic breathing: Taking a diaphragmatic breath involves inhaling a deep breath into the lungs rather than a shallow breath into the chest.
  • 4-7-8 breathing: This technique stimulates the vagus nerve, helping to create a state of deep relaxation. It involves breathing in for four seconds, then holding the breath for seven seconds, then breathing out for eight seconds, repeating as necessary.
  • Box breathing: This technique involves breathing to a count of four, four times in a row. It is done by taking in a deep breath and then holding the breath, then releasing the breath, then holding again, all to a count of four (or whatever number works best). The inhale, holding, and exhales are typically for the same length of time.

Body Scanning

This is a technique in which the individual focuses on various parts of their body and notices any feelings or muscle tension. Body scanning can enhance awareness of the physical manifestations of emotions and calm the body down.

The steps for body scanning involve lying down or sitting in a comfortable position, starting at the toes, and gradually moving focus upward throughout the body. Notice any sensations without focusing too much on any particular area. This practice is a great way to connect the mind and body through acts of mindfulness.

Mindfulness practices are very useful for teenagers. These practices can help teens regulate stress, increase resilience, and become more emotionally stable. Strategies like meditation, deep breathing, and body awareness increase teen girls’ awareness of the present moment and enhance their ability to accept things as they are. All of these practices are acts of mindfulness. Through the help of Clearview Horizon Girls Academy andconstant practice, our students can apply mindfulness in their everyday lives to establish a more positive state of mind.
