The mother-daughter relationship is a relationship like no other. This relationship can shape the personality and behavior of each person involved, and having an unhealthy relationship can negatively impact both parties. Clearview understands the importance of this relationship and wants to help you nurture this relationship and thrive within it.
The Importance of the Mother-Daughter Relationship
The mother-daughter relationship is usually the first bond that a daughter experiences. How this relationship progresses shapes who a daughter will become and all of her future relationships. Unfortunately, damage to this relationship can impact your daughter’s future connections and who she will choose to form them with.
This dynamic is ever-changing. As both parties work through the different stages of life, the bond is tested and evolves. When the daughter is younger, she looks up to her mother and heavily relies on her to meet her needs. In a healthy relationship, the mother meets these needs, cares for the daughter, and is devoted to her. With age, the daughter turns to others for guidance and to get her needs met. She will form these connections based on what her mother has instilled in her. During that time, the mother learns her new role as a more distant outsider but maintains her supportive and encouraging relationship with her daughter.
How each party reacts during these changes can impact the next stage of the relationship. These effects can be positive or negative. Negative mother-daughter relationships can include the following characteristics:
- A controlling relationship: This happens when the mother tries to exert control over the daughter while the daughter seeks approval from the mother.
- Emotional disconnection: In this case, the mother shows little interest or emotional connection to the daughter, causing her to seek it elsewhere.
- A judgmental relationship: This is when the mother is overly critical of the daughter.
- The trophy child: The mother uses the daughter to one-up and impress others regardless of how the daughter feels.
- An enmity relationship: This type of relationship is full of arguments without compromise.
- Bosom buddies: In this case, the mother and daughter are more like friends than parent and child.
- A role reversal: In some families, the daughter takes on the duties of the mother for her mother.
- The narcissistic mother: In this type of relationship, the mother needs to be the center of attention. For this reason, she tries to control her daughter and can resent her daughter for even existing.
The Impact of a Negative Mother-Daughter Relationship
As stated earlier, being a part of the above-listed negative mother-daughter relationships can greatly impact both parties. Some of the negative effects can include the following.
Negative Effects on the Daughter
Some negative effects include:
- Low self-esteem
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Attachment and relationship issues
- Behavioral changes (aggressive, hostile, and isolated)
Negative Effects on the Mother
Possible negative effects on the mother include:
- Low self-esteem
- Feelings of failure
- A lack of motivation
- Depression
- Hostility toward the daughter
Ways to Repair the Mother-Daughter Relationship
The mother-daughter relationship is an important one. Repairing any damage to this relationship is vital to the prosperity of both parties. Fortunately, a variety of strategies can help mend and improve this relationship. They can include any one of the following.
Seek Professional Help
Reaching out to a third party, such as a counselor or mediator, can provide a safe environment where both parties can discuss their feelings. This situation allows for both mother and daughter to express themselves and address concerns as there is someone to mediate and monitor the situation. The third party can help change perspectives, de-escalate confrontations, and teach better communication skills.
Learn Better Communication Skills
Adopting healthier communication skills can help the mother and daughter communicate concerns and work through them. These improved communication skills can also ensure that future disagreements can be overcome and don’t damage the relationship. Good communication also promotes growth within the relationship. This growth stems from being able to create boundaries, discuss issues, converse with empathy, and be a support system for each other.
Work Through Problems at Clearview
At Clearview Horizon Girls Academy, we are a Residential Treatment Center for girls aged 12 to 18 who are struggling with emotional and behavioral problems. These problems can include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, personality disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We use a wide range of treatment interventions and therapies to help those who are struggling with these and other conditions.
A major component of our treatment program is family involvement. This involvement begins when mothers attend parent workshops that teach them a variety of skills. These skills include self-reflection, healthy and effective communication, and relationship-building. The goal behind these skills is to encourage healthy bonding and connection between mother and daughter. These skills also help mothers to grow and learn from the past in order to help prevent damage to the mother-daughter relationship in the future.
Toward the end of the workshop weekend, the daughter usually joins the mother for sessions. Attending the workshop together provides the mother with an opportunity to practice her new skills. Those sessions also give the daughter a chance to see what the mother has learned, how it will benefit their relationship, and open up the lines of communication to work through the past.
The mother-daughter relationship is a unique dynamic full of ups and downs. This relationship can greatly impact the development of both parties as they progress through the stages of life. When the daughter is young, she is looking to her mother for guidance and care, and the mother feels a sense of purpose. As the daughter ages, her reliance on her mother changes, and the mother has to change her level of involvement. In a healthy relationship, these changes help foster growth and bonding. In unhealthy circumstances, the changes can cause turmoil that seems impossible to overcome.
