When a child has self-medication struggles, of course, the primary concern is for their emotional, mental, and physical well-being. However, while these issues are paramount, that does not mean that other potential ramifications should be ignored. These ramifications often include financial, academic, and social consequences. They can also include legal troubles.
The first thing we must emphasize regarding our role here at Clearview Horizon Girls Academy is that we cannot offer legal advice or promise legal help. What we can do is help your daughter with her dependency struggles so that future legal troubles can be avoided. There are also instances in which seeking treatment can mitigate any current legal troubles that a child may be facing. Of course, that is not something we can promise.
The truth is that legal trouble can have serious consequences for your daughter down the road. Sometimes the immediate results of fines and sentences are not the most damaging aspect of your daughter’s legal troubles. Instead, it is how these results can impede future opportunities. This can include getting into certain schools or having an edge when it comes to getting a particular job. This is why it is so important to seek recovery help before or immediately after legal trouble begins.
Intercepting Struggles Before Negative Effects
When discussing self-medication and legal troubles, it may help to discuss the warning signs of adolescent addiction. Perhaps this could help you to spot your daughter’s struggles before they create any legal issues at all. According to Youth.gov, some of the warning signs include but are not limited to:
- Sudden mood changes, which include excessive irritability and defensiveness
- A sudden drop in academic achievement and an increase in academic apathy
- A loss of interest in activities that they once enjoyed
- Participation in a new friend group, and a reluctance to introduce new friends to their parents
- Exhibiting the physical effects of drinking and/or , such as slurred speech, poor mobility, and an inability to communicate properly
- The discussion of self-harm, or attempts at suicide
If one or more of these warning signs are present, it is probably time to seek help. Seeking help now may also help mitigate the legal trouble that often accompanies her struggles.
The Long-Term Dangers of Legal Trouble for Adolescents
Unfortunately, it is not always possible to avoid legal trouble when it comes to the consequences of dependence on drinking and meds. When this happens, it is time to address that legal trouble by first addressing your daughter’s struggles. If legal trouble arises that relates to these issues, many times a judge or prosecutor will allow someone to get help while the case continues. This is especially true if the individual is a minor.
Now, this does not mean that the legal trouble will necessarily go away. Also, it is important to note that there are, of course, tiers of legal trouble. Each situation has its caveats. What it does mean, however, is that your child will be able to get the help they need sooner rather than later, especially if the alternative would be some form of incarceration.
Getting help sooner rather than later also does not mean the legal consequences will change. However, if your daughter puts in the proper work in our recovery program, she will then handle the legal consequences thoughtfully and responsibly.
Moving Past Legal Troubles in Long-Term Recovery
We do not allow our students to be “victims” here at Clearview Horizon Girls Academy. Instead, we teach our students to be accountable for their actions as well as accountable for their behaviors moving forward. This can be particularly helpful when it comes to our students who are under the pressure of legal troubles.
In the Bible, Galatians 6:4-5 states, “Each one of you should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load.” This is the basis of one of our principles here at Clearview Horizon Girls Academy. We teach our students that they are responsible for their actions. They are also responsible for how those actions affect themselves and their fellow students. When it comes to facing any legal troubles that may have accompanied them during their stay at our recovery center, we teach them to face them head-on, not to run away or hide.
We teach our students that avoiding conflict or consequences is no way to live their lives. If your daughter is in legal trouble, she is going to be able to face it and eventually grow from it. Yes, it can be scary when our children get into trouble. However, we must always remember that “it isn’t that we fall, it’s that we get back up.”
Many consequences can come from untreated drinking or self-medication. There are physical consequences, emotional consequences, and academic consequences, to name a few. However, there is one consequence that is often overlooked (until it is too late). That consequence is getting into legal trouble. Legal consequences can change the entire trajectory of an individual’s life. Needless to say, it is rarely for the better. These consequences can be especially damaging for adolescents because they have yet to establish roots. Legal issues can interrupt academic, financial, and professional opportunities that otherwise would have been available. However, legal trouble does not have to stop them from getting the help they deserve. For more information, call Clearview at 866-584-4788.
