As a parent, you want your daughter to learn the skills she needs to succeed in life. At Clearview Horizon Girls Academy, we believe that treatment should be an all-encompassing process that teaches your daughter how to care for herself. This is because acquiring life skills alongside therapeutic work creates a greater chance of long-term success. We know that when your daughter becomes confident in her abilities, this will help her to thrive after leaving our program.
At Clearview, we offer ways to improve all aspects of your daughter’s skills in all areas. Toward that end, we offer life skills classes where she can learn life skills. These skills will assist her as she grows from a teenager into a young woman.
Possessing life skills will help your daughter have a sense of pride and accomplishment. As she learns how to best care for herself, she will feel ready for adulthood. Learning to do things like taking care of herself in a practical physical sense will allow her to take control of her life. The sense of pride she will receive from caring for herself will allow her to incorporate care and purpose into each area of her life. As she experiences what it is like to take care of herself, she will be encouraged to continue this responsible behavior. Feeling competent will also help her endure and keep going in her life rather than focus on the pain of addiction or mental health struggles.
Life Skills Offered at Clearview
Learning life skills is an important part of therapy and life. At Clearview Horizon Girls Academy, we offer ways to learn life skills through our life mentoring program. Girls have the opportunity to work alongside mentors who teach them invaluable skills. This program relies on our belief that each girl should take control of her recovery. It is a voluntary program in which students choose their level of involvement.
We believe that taking responsibility encourages students who work with us to maintain their recovery when they leave. These skills they learn will also help to teach them personal responsibility. The skills girls can learn in this program include:
- Cooking
- Managing the home, including cleaning, chores, etc.
- Organization and money management
- Future planning and time management
- Personal care, physical fitness, and health maintenance
- Relationship skills
These skills are meant to set each student up for success. Long-term success is facilitated by taking personal responsibility and learning to care for oneself. As we teach her these skills alongside therapy, this will set her up to manage any triggers and struggles on her own. Knowing how to manage her home and her health will keep her healthy and active. Also, this will keep her mind off of addiction or mental health struggles.
The Importance of Life Skills in Recovery
When a girl comes to us with addiction problems, we work to alleviate all of the struggles of addiction. The process of recovering from addiction can be difficult. Some treatment plans may include medication management. Most include working therapeutically with the student to get her back in control. This therapeutic process should be all-encompassing. Learning life skills and the ability to care for herself is part of that process. When your daughter knows how to do basic tasks she will use throughout her life, this will benefit her in many ways.
As your daughter is able to better manage her own life, she should feel the pull to care for herself. Focusing on managing her home and planning for her future will keep her mind off of the struggles that brought her to addiction in the first place. She will have a clearer mind for focusing on recovery, schoolwork, and the work it will take to succeed. These skills will also enable her to manage her own emotions and emotional struggles.
If your daughter has issues with mental health, you may have noticed her falling behind in places like school and self-care. Volunteering to take back personal agency will give her the skills she needs to make a difference in her life. It will also help her keep her eyes facing forward, focusing on the future.
Helping Girls Achieve Long-Term Success
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) states that “Recovery is characterized by continual growth and improvement in one’s health and wellness and managing setbacks.”
This process of long-term success will look different for every student but always includes working on one’s wellness. This includes mental, emotional, and physical wellness, but also having the ability to manage practical life matters. Life mentoring allows us to prepare each girl for long-term success. The skills our students learn enable them to focus on their futures rather than only on the pain they have experienced before. Looking forward to the future will give your daughter the confidence she needs to overcome her current challenges.
When your daughter is struggling, you want to ensure you set her up for optimal success. Keeping her involved and responsible in her care will encourage her to stay on the path to recovery. It is important to choose a program that focuses on treating her holistically. This includes teaching her the skills that she will need to make a difference in her life. As your daughter learns to care for herself, she can better manage her life. Working alongside mentors in our life skills mentoring program will give your daughter the confidence she needs to get through recovery.
