Understandably, choosing a treatment program for our child can fill us with uncertainty. After all, when we find that our child is struggling, getting them the right help, right away, becomes the most paramount task of our lives. The issue is that some bad actors utilize these feelings of uncertainty to try and entice us into getting our daughter into a treatment program that doesn’t fit her exact needs. This is why getting to know a little bit more about treatment options – such as partial hospitalization programs (PHPs), intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), and residential treatment programs – can be highly beneficial in the long run.
What Exactly Is Residential Treatment?
While it may seem that residential treatment sounds pretty self-explanatory, the truth is that not all residential treatment is created equally. Simply put, residential treatment programs require indivdiuals to reside at the treatment facility as they participate in treatment. However, that stay can look very different depending on the residential treatment center.
For example, some facilities may consider themselves residential, but only because they require individuals to reside at their facility to complete an inpatient detoxification program. To quickly note, this would be specific to addiction treatment. On the other hand, some residential treatment programs can only keep clients in residence for 30 days, while other facilities have the option to extend stays to 90 days or more.
Lastly, there are residential programs that are more extensive. This would be where Clearview fits in. Here at Clearview Horizon Girls Academy, we require all of our clients to stay in residence for a minimum of one year. The reason we do this is because our recovery mission is extensive, and also includes academic restoration. Thus, an adequate amount of time is needed for this type of well-rounded recovery.
What Makes Residential Treatment Different From Other Treatment Options?
Now, this is not to say that other treatment options are not effective. Not at all. What we are saying is that it is crucial to understand which treatment options best fit your daughter’s situation, including their mental health and/or addiction needs. When thinking of treatment options, the most important step is reaching out to a mental health professional or recovery specialist for support. These individuals can help you determine whether inpatient or outpatient treatment is the right choice for your daughter.
Now, there are many factors that professionals may take into account to determine which choice may best fit your daughter’s recovery needs. Some factors may be very logistical. For example, it is important to consider your finances, including what your insurance may cover. Another factor that must be addressed is the type of recovery that is required. You will need to identify whether your daughter is struggling with an addiction, another specific mental health disorder, or a combination of the two. More likely than not, some comorbidities need to be addressed.
Ultimately, the primary factor in choosing the type of recovery program for your daughter will most likely come down to the severity of the symptoms your daughter is experiencing from their condition. Outpatient treatment is often best for those individuals who can still reasonably function in their day-to-day lives. On the other hand, PHPs tend to be best for those who require closer attention but also need to keep one foot out in their everyday lives. Finally, for those individuals who are in the most need of attention, residential treatment provides the highest structure and most intensive therapeutic care.
The Added Benefits of Residential Treatment
Aside from being more closely monitored, there are many other “less clinical” benefits to residential treatment. Some of these benefits include:
- A chance to reset and reestablish values away from a potentially triggering or toxic environment
- The ability to make deeper connections, both with their peers and with their therapists
- Allowing the family to get the focused help that they need, as well as the chance to properly and healthily prepare for their return
- An opportunity to gain independence
- Freedom to reinvent themself, or to find their true self again
- At Clearview Horizon Girls Academy, an opportunity for academic achievement
Why We Chose Residential Recovery at Clearview
We choose residential recovery at Clearview because we believe in a three-tiered approach to recovery. These tiers are academic achievement, behavioral restoration, and spiritual growth. Moreover, we understand that effectively achieving each of these goals requires intense focus on healing as well as an adequate amount of time.
Here at Clearview Horizon Girls Academy, we are not simply a “fix-your-kid” program. Rather, we take an individualized approach to each of our student’s needs and make a comprehensive recovery plan based on them. To do this properly, it takes a certain amount of time to heal. We like to say that our goal is to light our students’ path to recovery, and sometimes that light takes time to become its brightest. However, once it hits that illumination point, it’s much harder to turn it down.
There are many options for mental health recovery. This includes local inpatient treatment, outpatient treatment, and attending an extended residential recovery center. While there are many benefits from all treatment options, we here at Clearview have found that a residential recovery center has been the most effective. That is why we are a residential recovery center that requires a minimum of a year of residency. This close residential contact allows us the best opportunity to connect with our students and give them the tools they need to continue their recovery journey.
